Honoring a Legacy Through Education: The Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship

At VALR Advisors, we believe that opportunity can change the trajectory of a life. That's why we are proud to support the Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship awarded annually through First Literacy to an adult learner pursuing higher education.

The scholarship was established in 2022 in memory of Tom Brunnick, whose story exemplifies resilience, determination, and the pursuit of a better future.

In 1921, Tom immigrated to the United States from Ireland, escaping poverty and civil unrest in search of opportunity. Like many newcomers arriving in America, he faced uncertainty and challenges, but through hard work and perseverance, he built a life for himself and his family. He eventually raised five children and purchased a home in Boston, creating opportunities for future generations.

Tom's journey was not one he traveled alone. He benefited from the support of a community that helped him establish roots and build a future. Decades later, his family continues to honor that legacy by helping others pursue their own dreams through education.

Today, the Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship is the first and only First Literacy scholarship that provides recipients with the opportunity to pursue full-time education without the burden of tuition costs. While many scholarships offer partial support, this scholarship removes a significant barrier that often prevents adult learners from continuing their education.

This year's recipient, Luis M., embodies the same determination and work ethic that defined Tom's life.

Luis recently graduated with honors from Bridgewater State University with a degree in Cybersecurity while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience in his field. His commitment to personal and professional growth demonstrates the power of education, perseverance, and opportunity.

Organizations like First Literacy play a critical role in making stories like Luis's possible. As the only organization in Massachusetts that awards scholarships to adult learners through nominations from community-based Adult Basic Education programs, First Literacy helps individuals overcome barriers and pursue meaningful educational and career opportunities. Many recipients are newcomers to the United States, pursuing the same aspirations that brought Tom Brunnick to Boston more than a century ago.

For the Brunnick family and the team at VALR Advisors, the scholarship represents far more than financial assistance. It is an investment in individuals who are committed to improving their lives, strengthening their communities, and creating opportunities for future generations.

We are honored to continue supporting this scholarship and to celebrate the accomplishments of recipients like Luis. His success serves as a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge has no age limit and that, with the right support, determination can open doors to extraordinary possibilities.

Congratulations, Luis, on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to seeing the impact you continue to make in the years ahead.
